Local SEO in the AI Search Era

Seven steps for Taiwanese SMEs to be found by AI

The local search entry point moved from the map to the chat box

Local SEO is the practice of being found when nearby customers search for "area + service"; by 2026 it must also satisfy how AI engines choose what to recommend.

Customers used to open Google Maps and search "Kaohsiung video production". Now they may simply ask ChatGPT which companies in Kaohsiung produce corporate films. AI does not return ten blue links — it names two or three businesses. Whether you make that shortlist depends on how consistent, structured and cross-verifiable your brand information is.

The seven steps below run from foundation upward; work through them in order.

Step 1: Unify your NAP so every platform tells the same story

NAP means Name, Address and Phone. Engines compare these across your site, Google Business Profile, social profiles and directories. Any mismatch makes it hard to confirm they describe one company.

  • Use the registered legal name; avoid mixing abbreviations, English names and former names.
  • Fix one address format, including floor and unit notation.
  • Use one phone format, always as a click-to-call link on the site.
  • Keep a single "brand facts sheet" as the source of truth for every platform update.

Step 2: Complete your Google Business Profile

Google Business Profile is the single most important local asset and a key source AI engines use to verify a business genuinely exists.

  • Finish verification and choose primary and secondary categories carefully — categories decide which queries you are matched against.
  • Fill in hours, services, service area and website URL with no blank fields.
  • Upload real photos of the space, team and work on a regular basis.
  • Add the profile URL to your website's structured data sameAs so both sources corroborate each other.

Step 3: Add LocalBusiness structured data

Structured data translates business facts into a machine-readable declaration instead of leaving engines to guess from prose.

  • Add LocalBusiness or Organization to the homepage with name, address, telephone, email and openingHours.
  • List official profiles in sameAs, including the Google Business Profile.
  • Use Service on service pages, FAQPage for questions and BlogPosting for articles.
  • Structured data must match visible page content — it cannot live only in the code.

Step 4: Let location terms appear naturally in content

Local keywords belong in headings, service descriptions and case narratives, not stuffed into a footer list of city names.

  • Write page titles in natural "service + area" order rather than stacking multiple cities.
  • Describe the actual service area and delivery method instead of a vague "nationwide" claim.
  • Note the real location in case studies and event records — the most credible local signal there is.
  • Show full address, phone and hours on the contact page, with a map link.

Step 5: Answer local questions with a visible FAQ

AI engines strongly favour question-and-answer content. Writing the questions prospects actually ask hands AI an answer it can repeat.

  • Phrase questions the way customers speak, e.g. "Which areas do you serve?"
  • Lead the answer with the conclusion, then add detail.
  • Keep a visible FAQ block on the page and mirror it in FAQPage structured data.
  • State only what is true; never promise turnaround times or terms you cannot honour.

Step 6: Build corroboration through reviews and mentions

When AI weighs whether a local business is worth recommending, it looks for cross-verifiable public sources. A website praising itself carries limited weight.

  • Invite genuine customers to leave Google reviews and reply to each one thoughtfully.
  • Pursue mentions from trade media, associations and local press, then collect them on a news page.
  • Use the correct full brand name and location consistently in video and social content.
  • Never buy fake reviews — inconsistent sources undermine credibility.

Step 7: Audit consistency and results on a schedule

Local SEO usually fails because information goes stale, not because the strategy was wrong. A move, a new number or changed hours that never get synced will cancel out the first six steps.

Frequently asked questions

What is NAP consistency and why does local SEO depend on it?

NAP stands for Name, Address and Phone. Engines cross-check these across your website, Google Business Profile, social profiles and directories. Mismatched versions make it hard to confirm they describe one company, weakening local ranking and AI recommendation.

Can a business without a storefront do local SEO?

Yes. Define a service area in Google Business Profile and write service descriptions, cases and FAQs using local terms. The goal is to make served regions unambiguous rather than to emphasise a shopfront.

How does local SEO relate to AI search optimization?

AI engines combine site content, structured data and cross-verifiable public sources. Complete LocalBusiness data, consistent NAP and clear FAQs make it far easier to enter the shortlist. Solid local SEO is the foundation of AI local recommendation.

How long does local SEO take?

Generally several months of consistent work, depending on competition and the current state of the site and profile. Foundational fixes usually show change first.

Clean up the facts before chasing rankings

There is no shortcut in local SEO, but there is a clear order of operations. Most SMEs stall not because they lack content, but because the same set of facts exists in three different versions across platforms.

Unify the NAP, complete the business profile, get the structured data right — only then does further content investment compound into brand authority.
